Vertical Oyster Gardens (VOGs) consist of a short braided rope with 40-80 recycled oyster shells threaded to create a vertical column of substrate suitable for juvenile oyster recruitment. Developed by Tampa Bay Watch, the VOG Citizen-Science Program recruits homeowners to suspend substrate off docks and follow up by surveying the garden annually. Citizen scientists photograph and measure oyster recruitment on the vertical oyster garden. The program increases oyster habitat, improves water quality, and enhances stewardship of Tampa Bay.
